MEXICO CITY – President Enrique Peña Nieto said that the new Culture Secretariat will not mean more bureaucracy and will be an efficient and transparent agency.
“The new Culture Secretariat will not involve, and I emphasize this, a greater budgetary burden. It won’t mean more bureaucracy or affect any rights of the workers in this important sector. It will be a modern, transparent and inclusive agency,” said Peña Nieto.
A few hours after Congress approved the creation of the secretariat, Peña Nieto issued the corresponding decree in the National Palace. There, after acknowledging the lawmakers present, he said that the main mission of the new secretariat will be to support the artists, disseminate art, protect the historical heritage, safeguard artistic plurality and bring artistic activities closer to children and young people.
“The creation of the Culture Secretariat is certainly a historic decision which will allow for the coordination of institutional efforts to implement access to culture, a right enshrined in Article 4 of our Constitution,” said the president.
Mexico recognizes the contribution of arts and culture to the national development, and the government is committed to promoting the creation of knowledge for the benefit of Mexican society, Peña Nieto said.
“Promoting the work of artists and scientists is, in the end, sowing the future. It’s projecting the best of a nation into the future.”
Mexico recognizes the talent of artists and that is why promoting and protecting the Mexican artistic and cultural heritage is a priority, said Peña Nieto.
